For Excellence in Science
Boris Worm + Heike Lotze
For their work increasing our knowledge about the changing abundance and diversity of the planet’s marine wildlife

For Excellence in Policy
U.S. Congressman Ed Markey
For his extensive work and legislative proposals to protect the ocean from the impacts of overfishing, pollution and climate change

For Excellence in Media
Nancy Baron + COMPASS
For their individual and organizational success improving marine scientists ability to communicate their findings to the public and the media

Christopher Benchley Youth Award
Sean Russell
For his outstanding work beginning in high school to address the problem of marine plastic pollution and mobilizing other youths for ocean conservation

Hero of the Seas
Karen Garrison + Kaitilin Gaffney
For more than a decade of collaborative effort and public outreach that helped lead to the creation of a world-class network of ocean wilderness parks off California

THE EVENT

The 6th Annual Peter Benchley Ocean Awards will take place Wednesday, May 15, 2013. The awards ceremony, free and open to the general public, will take place in the auditorium at the Carnegie Institution for Science at 6:00 PM and will be followed by a ticketed dinner at 7:30 PM in the ballroom.
