Kelp is the New Coral

The Kelp Education & Learning Project (K.E.L.P.) is a global outreach and engagement campaign led by Blue Frontier to raise awareness, build coalitions, and mobilize action to protect and restore the world’s rapidly declining marine forests.

In terms of growing awareness we think that ‘Kelp is the new Coral!’ Through film screenings, a book tour, articles and reviews for Forest of the Sea and the development of an Ocean Kelp Action Plan, KELP will connect scientists, communities, policymakers, youth and conservation groups to advance protection, restoration, and policy solutions for these critical marine ecosystems.

Book cover titled 'Blue Frontier' with subtitle 'Dispatches from America's Ocean Wilderness' by David Helvarg, showing an ocean with waves and an offshore oil rig in the background.

David Helvarg has spent decades chronicling the fight for our oceans — and the fighters themselves. From The War Against the Greens, an unflinching look at the backlash facing environmentalists, to Blue Frontier and Rescue Warriors, his deep dives into ocean policy and the Coast Guard's conservation role, Helvarg's writing bridges hard journalism and hard-won hope. The Golden Shore traces California's complicated relationship with its coastline, while Saved by the Sea turns personal, exploring what the ocean means to those who love it. And 50 Ways to Save the Ocean — winner of the Herman Melville Award and inspiration for an award-winning video — has sold over 20,000 copies by putting real, actionable solutions in readers' hands. Together, these six books (with a seventh underway) form a body of work as vital and restless as the sea itself.

Sequoias of the Sea: The Vanishing Kelp Forests of California

More than 95% of the kelp forests have disappeared along the Northern California Coast.

SEQUOIAS OF THE SEA tells the story of the environmental, cultural and economic destruction impacting a coastal town that has lost its coastal kelp forest. It’s a deep dive into the lives of fishermen, tribes, scientists, and a community working to restore a habitat devastated by a warming climate.
