Rising Tide: The Ocean Podcast
For over seven years Rising Tide has been a refreshing, irreverent dive into the lives, work, and explorations of today’s leading and diverse ocean voices.
Each half-hour episode co-hosted by David Helvarg of Blue Frontier and Vicki Nichols Goldstein of the Inland Ocean Coalition sails through lively discussions with our guests about marine life, culture, and critical issues affecting our rapidly changing seas. Informative, enlightening, and often humorous it is an invaluable resource for anyone passionate about understanding, enjoying, and protecting our salty blue world.
Wild Fish Feeding Farmed Fish
Farmed salmon and shrimp are sold as the sustainable alternative to wild catch. The Outlaw Ocean Project’s five-year investigation, by more than 70 journalists, says otherwise. Its reporters mapped over 1,400 fish meal plants in more than 60 countries, fed by some 3,000 vessels hauling up sardines, anchovies, and krill to be ground into pellets for pen-raised fish. Ben Blankenship, who ran the field teams from West Africa to the Southern Ocean, joins David Helvarg and Joy Leilei Shih to describe what they found: crews kept at sea for years, and fishing communities in Senegal losing the small fish that feed them. He also covers a carcinogenic preservative that still turns up in the final product, and a new tool that traces a supermarket fillet back to the boat. The wealthy eat the luxury fish while the poor go hungry, and the label says “sustainable.”
